You sniff at and observe the trail from a distance. You can tell something or someone has been traversing through or on or by or around it. The signs are fairly subtle, however. Only a few twigs here and there. Only a few bent pieces of grass there and here. You can smell something, however.

The stenches of two very distinct animals fill your nostrils.
One is a reptile. You can tell because the smell reminds you of metal and rocks. Reptiles remind you of rocks and such.
The other is very distinctly mammal. It has fur, like you. Not as well kept or beautiful but fur nevertheless.
