Despite all decency and logic, you shove about a bear-mouth size amount of dirt into a very dead tiny animal. It is surprisingly difficult to lodge the soil very far into the completely helpless and completely deceased creature. You end up having a baby bird covered in dirt and grime, its neck limp and crooked at this point. It is a truly an unpleasant thing to witness, and it was a very strange choice for you to make.
The baby bird does not look at peace. It just looks dirty now.
